San Telmo
San Telmo is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Buenos Aires. Founded along the slopes of the river, it was home to aristocrats in its early years. San Telmo and La Boca districts are said to be the birthplaces of Tango, the national dance.
Tourist Attractions in San Telmo
Due to its proximity to the port of Buenos Aires, San Telmo was heavily influenced by the massive arrival of immigrants in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
With the movement of the aristocratic families to the Recoleta and Belgrano districts, San Telmo streets adapted the ornamental faįades into conventillos, a type of housing where many families lived together. The mix created a very attractive and cosmopolitan look.
Along the years, the neighborhood ended up evolving into a more bohemian profile, and nowadays the apartments in San Telmo are home to an important community of artists and tango artists.
